About Us
For K-12 educators and educational facilitators who need to engage students with accurate, experiential historical education that connects to current curriculum standards, Digging Deeper provides customized, curated archeological and historical preservation workshops that empower teachers to develop experiential lesson seeds directly from primary sources and expert partnerships. Unlike traditional textbook-based approaches or disconnected enrichment programs, Digging Deeper serves as the essential bridge between archeologists, historical sites, and classroom implementation—offering professional development credits while enabling teachers to create geographically-focused, thematic social studies experiences that align with Maryland's new educational standards and bring history to life in ways that are authentic, locally relevant, and culturally transformative.

With more than 25 years of combined classroom experience, Digging Deeper founders Julia Berg and Sarah Mason are leaders in Social Studies education. As veteran educators, we cultivate compassionate learning environments that foster curiosity as a path to authentic inquiry. We teach students to navigate controversial topics by examining evidence and seeking consensus, thereby establishing a solid foundation for engaged citizenry.
As amateur archaeologists, Sarah and Julia see the value in preserving and promoting responsible stewardship of our shared cultural resources, and we are passionate about helping educators infuse archaeology into their lessons.
In addition to their classroom responsibilities, they have designed and presented professional development at the school, district, state, and national level and have created curriculum for their local district as well as for private institutions. Sarah and Julia have developed curriculum for both elementary and middle school grades, and specialize in training educators to navigate difficult conversations in the classroom related to hard history, such as the Holocaust and race-based slavery. Julia contributed to the development of the new Maryland 6th and 7th Grade Social Studies Standards. Drawing upon their education and communication skills, Sarah and Julia went on to write content for Gibbs Smith’s textbooks aligned with the new standards.
